Does each marker on the map represent a room?
Are the "dark grey" spaces fill-in characters for an empty room?
Does the "#" represent a wall?
Why is the map so far to the right?
Just a guess here, but given the size, scope, and colour detail, I'm gonna guess that's about 12-13kb of data per look_at_room(). If you have a decent pbase that is currently sprinting across the world, you could be uploading MBs of data per second... could lag the server.
Have you considered to possibility of using MSDP or ATCP to do something with graphics, or have the map self-updating similar to what KaVir, and others of have done?

interesting. cant wait to try it out sometime. the only mud i ever really played where there was a good map system it was raze the dead, that cool zombie hack and slasher.

are there going to be any descriptions or all map?
